ICC WTC final: Despite Rohit Sharma's criticism, says ICC 2025 World Test Championship final to be held in England alongside WTC 2027
ICC WTC Final: Amid India's ongoing India-England Test series, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed that the 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final will be held in England. Along with the WTC 2025 final, which takes place at Lord's, the final of the 2027 tournament will also be held in England.
On Friday, the ICC issued a request for a socially responsible supplier for the period 2024-2027. The list included countries and the year they would host certain ICC events.
This list saw England host the 2025 ICC World Test Championship and the 2027 finals. It is worth noting that England also hosted the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals.
India lost the WTC 2021 final against New Zealand in Southampton, England. Rohit Sharma and Co again failed to win the title at the second attempt in the WTC 2023 final against Australia at The Oval. The final of the current WTC cycle will be held at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has often faced criticism for hosting the premier Test tournament in England. Fans and pundits criticized cricket's governing body for not leaving England, even after England had already hosted two previous series.
In fact, Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his disappointment to the ICC after India's WTC 2023 final against Australia for hosting the event in England.
The Indian captain asked, "Why after the IPL final? Why can't it be March? June is not the only month we have to play the final. It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world become, not only in England, it can be played anywhere in the world."
In addition, June was specifically kept as a window to host the final of the World Test Championship. The 2021 final took place between 18 and 23 June, while the dates for the 2023 final were between 7 and 11 June.
As for the current ICC World Test Championship standings, Australia is on top with a winning percentage of 61.11. Team India is second with a winning percentage of 54.16, followed by South Africa (50.00), New Zealand (50.00) and Bangladesh (50.00) in the top five.
At the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings, Pakistan sit sixth with a win percentage of 36.66, followed by England (15.00), West Indies (11.11) and Sri Lanka (0.00).
India and England are engaged in a five-match Test series, the first of which is underway. At the same time, Australia hosts the West Indies for a 2-match Test series, the second of which is currently underway at the Gabba.
