Hundred and some drama

Jason Roy gets to the three-figure mark and it has been an impressive hundred for sure. Lofted shots and crunchy drives from the Surrey opener.



There is some drama in the middle as well. The fielder at deep square leg misfielded, resulting in a boundary. Roy also took down the umpire (accidentally) at the bowler's end. The on-field umpire must have had a shock!!

Mehidy lifts Bangladesh

Bairstow also completed his fifty. A trademark innings from the Yorkshireman - punches, drives and pulls. Just when the duo looked set to string together a massive stand, Mehidy picked up a sharp catch at covers. Maybe that would lift Bangladesh.

Roy and sparkling fifty

When Roy is in good touch, he comes as an attractive batsman to watch. He showcased his penchant for shot-making with a glorious lofted stroke down the ground and then reached his 50 with a steer off Saifuddin. England's openers are rocking.

Jason Roy after failing against spin in the last game is looking in fine touch. The way he drove Shakib through covers and then pulled the same bowler via midwicket indicate that Roy is feeling good against spin. Bairstow has been a bit more cautious.

There is hardly any seam movement on offer. Remember, there was enough moisture for the games that involved Sri Lanka in Cardiff in this World Cup. Not so the case today.

Spin v Roy and Bairstow

As expected, Bangladesh too start with spin against Bairstow and Roy. It is Shakib with the new ball. However, the duo was troubled by wrist spin in the games versus South Africa and Pakistan.

Shakib extracted a hint of grip in the first over and that would encourage him.

Morgan: I don't think this is a bad toss to lose considering the amount of grass that has come off this wicket. Some grounds are bit shorter which doesn't allow to bowl spin in tandem. Playing two spinners creates a bit issue there hence we are playing an extra seamer. Little bit of a blip, little bit of a bad day against Pakistan. Today, hopefully we will show that it is not something that is an issue. We played some good cricket against South Africa and hopefully we will play good cricket today.

Mortaza: We will bowl first. This pitch has been under cover for the last two days. We liked to but we are sticking with the same team. Last match was disappointing but hopefully we will bounce back. We have to play at our best to beat this England team.

Toss

Bangladesh have elected to field. Maybe to extract any help out of the surface early on in the game. Not too sure there is much in it today. Bangladesh go in with the same side, while England bring in Plunkett.

Pitch conditions - It is bright, sunny day in Cardiff. I can see a hint of grass covering, but most likely to hold the pitch together. It usually does a bit early on in Cardiff, but the moisture would have dried out with sun around. It could turn out to be a good surface for batting with a bit of help for spinners later on in the game.

Prelude:

2011 World Cup - Bangladesh v England - Chattogram stadium. Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam powered the home side to an unforgettable two-wicket victory. It was a day of doom for the visitors as their plans came unstuck with dew around.

2015 World Cup - the two sides locked horns in Adelaide with Bangladesh again sealing a thriller to reach the last eight.

Mahmudullah, who was again the star of the show with a ton, is still playing. Eoin Morgan, who led England in that game, is still the captain of the national side. So we could be in store for another blockbuster between the two sides in the 2019 World Cup game in Cardiff. Remember, there has been a bit of bad blood between the two teams in the recent past as well.

England, who began the tournament as favourites, slid to a loss versus Pakistan. So they would look to put that defeat behind them and get back to winning ways. With the likes of Roy, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Morgan and Co. in the batting unit, they have the firepower to notch up tall scores. Meanwhile, Bangladesh have put up a good show under the leadership of Mortaza; winning one game and losing a close one to New Zealand.
